Iconic “gentleman’s magazine” Playboy have just made a statement signalling the end to the printed iteration of the long-running cultural touchstone. The magazine which was first printed in 1953 by Hugh Hefner, will still continue in digital format with articles and content hosted on their website, though the effects of the coronavirus have been too great to sustain the printed magazine.
“Last week, as the disruption of the coronavirus pandemic to content production and the supply chain became clearer and clearer, we were forced to accelerate a conversation we’ve been having internally: the question of how to transform our U.S. print product,” Ben Kohn, CEO of Playboy Enterprises, wrote in a letter. “We have decided that our Spring 2020 Issue, which arrives on U.S. newsstands and as a digital download this week, will be our final printed publication for the year in the U.S.”
Infamously the magazine attempted to move away from the nudity it became famous for last year, but a decline in sales saw it revert back to the tried formula. “Over the past 66 years, we’ve become far more than a magazine,” Kohn noted. “And sometimes you have to let go of the past to make room for the future,” Kohn stated.
It’s another sad day for print media and we can only expect that Playboy Magazine won’t be the only one of it’s kind to fall victim to the current economic conditions. Check out Sophie Monk’s NSFW Playboy shoot right here:
