Ryan Reynolds and the superhero genre have a complicated history. Sure, he’s found huge success with ultimate anti-hero Deadpool, but it’s safe to say his other performance as a superhero lead is, well, a steaming pile of dog shit. Specifically, we’re talking about the amazingly awful Green Lantern.
And he’s fully aware of it too, constantly talking shit about the film and admitting it was the epitome of awful. Now, however, Reynolds has turned shit on its head, getting smashed on gin (his own Aviation Gin of course) while watching 2011’s Green Lantern for the first time ever while live-tweeting. The results are beautiful to say the least.
From gentle-ribbing to pure nostalgia and trolling to the max, old mate Reynolds covered the full spectrum of emotions in his classic comedic flare. However, aside from all the trolling and drunk tweets, there are some cute moments in there, especially where he reflects on starring opposite Blake Lively (who he ended up marrying). But there’s one thing we can definitely agree on, and it’s that the writing for Reynolds’ tweets is still somehow a thousand times better than that of the whole Green Lantern film. If you don’t believe us, check them out below.
Excited to see the Snyder Cut. But ahead of its debut – and with the aid of a good amount of #AviationGin – tonight at 6pm EST I’ll do something I’ve never done: actually watch Green Lantern. Happy #StPatricksDay

I only ever read my parts of the script so this is genuinely exciting for me to watch

This protagonist seems reckless but likable

Oh boy. Tragic childhood flashback sequence killing a beloved parent. Designed to instill a level of depth and hard fought empathy for our hero. Disney perfected this move.

Honestly, this cast is incredible.

Do you have any idea how weird it is to act while being attacked by invisible space energy?

Goddamn I miss Michael Clarke Duncan.

They spent 6 hrs each day turning Peter Sarsgaard’s head into an over-inflated beach ball. But the GL suit is a onesie made from old Frogger pixels.

The Christian Bale superhero voice. Who wore it first?

Maybe it’s the Aviation Gin talking, but #GreenLantern was nothing to fear! Hundreds of incredible crew and cast members did amazing work — and while it’s not perfect, it ain’t a tragedy. Next time I won’t wait a decade to watch.
