With a combined total of over 280 million Instagram followers, the three musicians are looking to amplify black voices during this period of great upheaval (and hopefully change) in the United States at the moment.
“After thinking about how best to use my social media, I decided that we all need to hear more from Black voices,” Gomez stated in an Instagram post, sharing a piece of art from black fine artist Charly Palmer. “We all have an obligation to do better and we can start by listening with an open heart and mind.” Her account has been used by BLM movement leader, Alicia GarzaJelani Cobb, reporter Jelani Cobb and African American Policy Forum co-founder Kimberlé Crenshaw.
Gaga’s account has since been taken over by the Community Justice Action Fund who have used the platform to promote other organisations such as March For Our Lives, The Wave App and Amnesty USA.
Mendes’ account has been taken over by black leaders including Zyahna Bryant, a student activist and community organizer, and Luis Jonathan Hernandez, founder of advocacy group Youth Over Guns.
