And you don’t need to be a comedy nerd and up on all the latest apricot-milk trends to get it.
If you’ve ever seen a 1980s or early 1990s sitcom – think Roseanne, Full House or Family Ties – this 11-minute video will hit. But it also gets more than a little weird – like this guy at Halloween.
Calling back to sitcom heyday when all that was needed to state the premise of a show was a catchy opening jingle explaining the show’s entire backstory and when shows were judged by said theme song, Too Many Cooks is a look into all of our lives. As such, it gets pretty gross…
Like all good viral media, this one was never made with the sole purpose of winning mainstream attention (see: Kim Kardashian). It aired late night to a few hundred thousand stoners. And then Adult Swim uploaded it to YouTube and the rest of history.
Ironically, it’s already spawned more spin-offs than said 1980s/90s sitcoms being parodied, including a Minecraft version and serious analysis from online gurus to keyboard heroes and alleged professors. Many are labelling it the best comedy short in history and it’s only been around for few days.
We don’t expect you’ll watch the whole thing first time around. You’ll be like “Ah, I get it” at about 1min10 and then turn it off. But the jingle won’t die. It doesn’t sleep. Not unlike herpes or KK , it keeps rearing its ugly head when you least expect it. Everywhere you go you’ll be singing it. So you’ll watch a few more minutes. And then you’ll be like, “Fuck it, my boss is an asshole and I’ll waste 11 minutes of his or her time doing whatever the fuck I want.”
Don’t resist it. Scratch that urge. In fact, watch it twice and you kick that itch’s ass.
And look for how many times Bill the Murderer appears before his first kill. We counted 11. And of course, someone with too much time on their hands has already done an analysis on his screen time. But there is more than just the jingle and fonts that make this feel familiar. It reminds us of another short from earlier this year – also on Adult Swim – from the mind of Tyler the Creator and his Loiter Squad crew.
Check them both out below and let us know what you think. (The second one is only 57seconds)
