The coldest season of True Detective yet?

The latest season of everyone’s favourite investigative series, True Detective, has been long awaited by fans, adherents of the HBO epic desperate for a first look at its fourth iteration. Today, HBO has granted our wishes, debuting a first look at the upcoming batch of episodes.

Appearing in a HBO sizzle reel for its upcoming 2023 releases (1:10 to save you time), the teaser lets slip the title of the new series, True Detective: Night Country, along with our first look at series leads Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as detectives Liz Danvers and Evangeline Navarro. Speaking in a voiceover, Foster can be heard saying, “I’m working on this case. These men disappeared 45 hours ago” as her and Reis are shown battling the elements and various adversaries in Ennis, Alaska. According to the official synopsis for the series, a total of eight men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station are being looked for, after vanishing “without a trace”.

The series marks the departure of creator Nic Pizzolatto and will be overseen Issa López (Tigers Are Not Afraid) and Barry Jenkins (Moonlight). No doubt this will come as a surprise to fans, but considering Lòpez and Jenkins’ theatrical track records as of late, we’re guessing True Detective: Night Country is in safe hands.
