Yeah, we know – The Simpsons hasn’t been that enjoyable for the last 15 seasons or so, but you’ve got to admire this history-making episode where Homer responded to real callers in a live episode.

It’s a brave stunt – Homer taking questions from fans and responding in real time – and the quick-witted team behind the long-running animation favourite did their best to squeeze some comedy out of the segment. Talking from a desk at the ‘Fox Studios Secret Bunker’, there’s a cameo from Bart Simpson and even some cross-series action when Matt Groenig’s equally ignorant creation, Bender strolls across the screen.

Live cartoon are cool and all, but wasn’t this segment a huge strain on the animator’s wrists? This episode definitely gave Homer some more human qualities in terms of his delivery and responses, while The Guardian predict that “it’s only a matter of time before live animation broadcasts such as this become commonplace.” We can’t wait to interview Duffman or Hans Moleman in real time.
