Even Tones herself can’t stand the song anymore…

It seems the hate for breakout song of 2019, ‘Dance Monkey’, is still going strong, with US actress Jenna Ortega taking aim at the record-breaking bop in her latest interview.

Appearing on Netflix’s Cookie Jar series, Ortega drew the question “What song is on your ‘Do Not Play’ list?” ‘Dance Monkey’, naturally, came straight to the 20-year-old’s mind, with Ortega explaining “I’m not big on pop. A couple years ago, there was a song out called Dance Monkey. If anyone ever played that in my house, they’re instantly being kicked out.”

They’re definitely harsh words for a song that’s gone platinum 17 times in Australia and has broken a bunch of records overseas. It seems, however, that Tones herself now harbours similar sentiments toward the single, with her explaining on Nova FM earlier this year, “I wrote that song on my own, not trying to do a single thing, and it happened,” she told Nova FM’s Smallzy’s Surgery earlier this year. But I don’t want to just try to chase that song – I loathe that song a lot of the time. A lot of times I don’t want to sing it. I don’t want to write another song like it”.

Well, the last part will no doubt be music to Ortega’s ears. Check out the full interview above and, in case you’ve somehow forgotten it, revisit ‘Dance Monkey’ in all of its glory below.
