Firstly, how the fuck did I not know about this film? Secondly, gimme gimme gimme…

There aren’t many lingering questions from the first trailer for Tom Gormican’s The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. It’s essentially asking us one thing: are you up for it? Are you down to watch Nicholas Cage boldly playing a fictionalised version of himself for a couple of hours in an action-comedy. If not, please turn away, this isn’t for you. If this sort of meta experimentation is your bag, then you’re probably gonna have a bloody good time.

Cage stated he was “feeling unfulfilled and contending with the rejection that can happen so often in the small town that is Hollywood… I wasn’t too excited about the idea of playing myself, but when Tom sent me this script, Nicky reminded me a little of Jerry Lewis’ Buddy Love in ‘The Nutty Professor,’” he added. “I always admired what he did with that movie. For me, Nicky steals the show.”

The plot, at this stage, is pretty digestible: an obsessive fan forces actor Nicolas Cage to re-create his most famous characters and scenes during a birthday party. The film, which also features Pedro Pascal, Sharon Horgan, Ike Barinholtz, Alessandra Mastronardi, Jacob Scipio, Lily Sheen, with Neil Patrick Harris, and Tiffany Haddish, is due April 2022 and already feels like a meme of itself.
