A modern-day Back to the Future

After weeks of teasing and even a delicious pre-teaser, Ryan Reynolds has finally dropped the second trailer for Free Guy, and it has Reynolds in one of his most heartwarming and original roles to date.

The trailer sees Reynolds play a bankteller named Guy. Except, this is no ordinary bankteller, rather, a virtual one. Reynolds is really a video game character, and once he becomes aware of it, shit hits the fan. Well, not hits the fan, but Guy decides to take his future into his own hands by making his own decisions in the game, causing a ruckus in the game and the real world.

The trailer, for all of its loveable comedy and goofiness, does do a pretty cool job of posing the question about what makes someone human. There’s also a really cool moment with Lil Rel Howery where he questions his existence, with Lil Rel responding “I am sitting here with my best friend trying to get him through a tough time. If that’s not real, I don’t know what is.”

It’s a pretty heartwarming flick, and has a perfect balance of humour and action with a smidge of existentialism. Fingers crossed it actually manages to come out December 11. Check it out below.
