Set to explore similar themes to the popular show…

In some super exciting news for The Wire fans, creator of the show David Simon is returning to Baltimore for a new series titled We Own This City. Based on the book A True Story Of Crime, Cops And Corruption, the upcoming spectacle will see Simon explore police corruption in 2015, following the death of 25-year-old Freddie Gray while in police custody.

The show specifically is set to follow Sergeant Wayne Jenkins, who’s tasked with getting guns and drugs off Baltimore streets as a part of the Gun Trace Task Force. However, he instead uses his new-found power to carry out illegal deals, take money from drug raids and even tamper with evidence. Essentially, the unit ends up becoming a criminal outfit of its own, with a federal Drug Enforcement Administration investigation ultimately yielding indictments against eight of its members.

Speaking on the show and the cult-like status its garnered for its focusing on policing and racism, The Wire star Wendell Pierce (who played Detective William ‘Bunk’ Moreland) said “I think it got most of it right. Someone was talking about that and challenging The Wire on social media and I said, ‘If you thought The Wire was glorification of policing in America you missed the point, because it was quite the opposite.’”

Definitely true words. No doubt the new show is gonna be every bit as raw and real as the OG that’s inspired countless shows since. Check out our favourite The Wire moments below and get keen.
