There’s a reason people froth on the Billabong x Otis Carey collections.

Actually, there are quite a few. Firstly, you’re basically copping wearable art from one of the country’s most loved First Nations artists: the man himself, Otis Carey. Secondly, it’s of course purpose-built for outdoor exploration, with Billabong’s stamp of durability all over it. And thirdly, the Billabong x Otis Carey range looks rad, and we can’t pretend like that doesn’t matter.

There’s a central figure that looms over the camo-heavy ninth collab between Otis and the Bong, a certain animal that the pro surfer and artist has had many a battle with. “I just love going fishing, walking the bank. And mangrove jack fishing’s one of my favourite types to fish to target,” Otis says. “The concept behind the camo is in regards to that; how they’re really elusive and they sort of hide. They’ll sit up under brush and under logs and crevices, and they’ll just come out and smash your lure.”

Throughout the drop, the camo pattern incorporates the colours of the Aboriginal Flag, paying homage to Otis’ ancestry, while simultaneously tapping into the fashion zeitgeist. Some pieces that have immediately fallen into our must-have basket are the Otis Sixty40 LT and Otis Dbah Pro boardshorts, with the Spray Jacket also catching our eye.

From the women’s range, two additional animal-print tees stand out: the Estuary Tee and the Snake Tee, featuring a mud crab and snake respectively – animals Otis regularly encounters out on the estuary.

To mark the release, Otis and fellow Billabong team rider Bodhi Simon hit the beach and the bush with director Sam Brumby, where they search for the mangrove jack AKA the fish of their dreams:
