High-end luxury brand Gucci has taken a huge step toward sustainability with their latest drop, releasing their first line of Vegan sneakers made from Demetra.
Spending two years developing the Vegan-focused material (which is named after the Greek goddess of harvest Demeter, pretty well-named tbh), the new leather alternative is made from 77 percent plant-based raw materials, including wood pulp and viscose. It also gives the appearance of real leather in the way it’s tanned and toned, but the best part is that Demetra gets the classic leather colour without animal cruelty or environmental harm, which is a huge damn plus.
And Gucci are making the most of the new material (can’t blame them), showcasing it in three new drops consisting of The Gucci Basket, Gucci New Ace and Gucci Rhyton.
Speaking on the step forward, Gucci President and CEO Marco Bizzarri said “In our 100th anniversary year, Demetra is a new category of material that encapsulates Gucci’s quality and aesthetic standards with our desire to innovate, leveraging our traditional skills and know-how to create for an evolving future.
“Demetra offers our industry an easily scalable, alternative choice and a more sustainable material that also answers the needs of animal-free solutions.”
It seems Gucci is gonna be spreading the Demetra love, licensing the material to other companies owned by its parent company Kering (which manages Saint Laurent, Bottega Veneta, Balenciaga and Alexander McQueen just to name a few) along with incorporating it across Gucci handbags, shoes, apparel and accessories.
The new Gucci shoes are on sale now in-store and online, and will be retailing for between $702 and $940 ($925 AUD to $1,238 AUD). Check them out below.
