Rihanna, Drake, Justin Bieber and Major Lazer are just some of the artists who have churned out singles doused in Carribbean flavours, while Jamaican crossover master Sean Paul is touring Australia later this year. Huge! But before dancehall became a mainstream staple, it was spread through the underground via lo-fi soundsystems and pirate radio – an approach that has influenced the latest collection from No News.
Dancehall’s DIY roots have clearly shaped No News’ own approach to fashion and garment-making, with the label dedicating their latest ‘Jamaican Bootleg’ collection to the movement. Appropriately, the collection features tees dashed with red, yellow and green, while there are more down-tempo numbers which stick to miniscule No News branding.
Favourably, there’s also monochrome button-up shirts which are practically begging to be unbuttoned when the liquor’s flowing and the dancefloor’s moving to that irresistible Jamaican rhythm. Sticking to their coastal roots, No News have some wetsuits and finely-cut boardshorts for those who want to splash about in the ocean.
