For an entire generation of Australians, their story with Umbro begins with the likes of David Beckham, Eric Cantona and Ryan Giggs donning the legendary double-diamond logo pattern when Manchester United were at the peak of football and culture. Umbro’s path to becoming the iconic sports fashion brand that it is now goes way further back than the Red Devils’ heyday…
Launched by brothers Harold and Wallace Humphreys in Manchester 100 years ago, under the guiding philosophy of “look smart, play smart,” Umbro have stuck toe their Mancunian roots, while reaching the pinnacle of performance-focussed sportswear, evidenced by the fact that the logo is currently worn by over 120 professional sporting teams worldwide.
Like their legendary collaborators such Supreme and Palace, the iconography of Umbro saw the company evolve beyond sports and bleed into the fashion world. Authenticity remains essential, tapping core labels like Japan’s Children of the Discordance to create something unique and truly collaborative.
Now we come to the second release from their Centenary Collection. Building on the first drop, the collection retains the essences of vintage sportswear, with patterns, cuts and logos, while pushing further into the world of fashion.
Taking inspiration from kits from the 70s and 80s, the tees are colourful and dynamic, with the sleek Monogram Anthem Jacket embodying the modern-meets-nostalgic energy of the drop. The pieces are malleable too; whether you want to wear them as a statement piece or as that little flurry of status within a look is up to you.
With the Centenary Collection, Umbro are firmly replanting their boots on Australian soil, with brand collabs and exclusive Aus-only releases in the pipeline. You can shop the Centenary Collection on their newly minted Australian website www.umbro.com.au and follow them on Insta here.
