Having released powerful singles ‘Medicine Woman’ and ‘Fiction From Fact’ in recent months past, we’ve been eagerly awaiting the debut full length from sultry songstress Demi Mitchell. Now we can finally treat our earholes to the nine tracks of sonic bliss that is The Overflow.
Musically the album is awash with jangly guitars and lingering melodies that walk the line between haunting and elegant, with the lyrics feeling like an honest and diary-like exercise in introspection. “The Overflow is an insight into a snippet of time in my life when I turned to music and writing to reconnect with parts of myself I thought were lost,” Demi says. “The songs are about feeling paralysed by your own mind and mustering the strength to do something about it.”
There’s a tenderness to the recording, somewhat reminiscent of Neil Young’s On The Beach that Demi says is down to producer Roger Bergodaz pushing her to get the right takes in a limited amount of time. “We recorded 11 tracks in three days, tracking vocals, drum, guitars all at once. Recording live gave the album gave a rocking rawness and gritty edge whilst maintaining the vulnerability of folk. I’m really proud of what we did.”
