On the eve of what would have been Amy Winehouse’s 40th birthday, the internationally acclaimed photographer, Charles Moriarty, is bringing his intimate collection, Amy, Before Frank, to Australia. This tribute showcases timeless photographs of a 19-year-old Amy Winehouse, capturing her just before she became a global sensation.
In 2003, Charles Moriarty was introduced to a young and self-assured 19-year-old named Amy Winehouse by a mutual friend. Little did he know that this meeting would lead to him photographing the cover for Amy’s debut album, Frank, and a lasting friendship.
Moriarty’s Amy, Before Frank collection features a series of photographs that depict a fun and mischievous side of Amy, reflecting a remarkable period in the life of one of music’s most iconic figures. The images are charming, intimate, insightful, and emotional for fans who have followed Amy’s turbulent journey, ending far too soon.
As Charles Moriarty brings “Amy, Before Frank” to Australia, he aims to show the world “the girl I knew; Amy before the fame, Amy before Frank.” His images have become an indelible part of cultural memory, with one of them now in London’s National Portrait Gallery’s permanent collection.
The exhibition will travel to Melbourne’s @14 Gallery in Collingwood, open to the public from November 1st to 5th, between 10 am and 5 pm each day. On Saturday, November 4th, at 12:30 pm, Moriarty will host an in-person artist talk.
