Often these days we see bands put out so many singles/videos before their album drops it can feel like we’ve already heard it a million times before the LP’s actual release. It’s understandable though, singles are a good excuse to tour and make money and promote the impending record for most artists in an industry where it can feel like you’re constantly pushing uphill to make a buck.
This hasn’t really been an issue for Arctic Monkeys since their 2006 release Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not, when the album from the humble Sheffield-bred four-piece became the fastest selling British debut in history. Meaning that they were pretty much able to do whatever they wanted for the rest of their careers without really having to be too concerned with cash flow, which is why they are able to release an album with minimal promo and no videos.
While the band have announced they will be having a pop-up store in Sydney at Golden Age Cinema on Friday and Saturday with limited edition merch which sounds like it would be worth checking out for any fans, it’s been pretty quiet on the video front (other than a few dodgy youtube videos) – so let’s take a look back at the best they’ve offered so far to get into the mood for Friday’s release of Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino.
Easily one of their weirdest clips, this one dropped as a stand-alone single in 2012 (appearing on AM a year later), and initially looks pretty boring and low-fi as Alex and Matt cruise around in SUV. The video takes a turn and out of nowhere comes some babes, an air guitar solo, flares and bass player Nicholas.

This tune came out somewhere in between Whatever People Say I Am and Favourite Worst Nightmare as some sort of promo. The clip follows a girl who is ‘saved’ by a man before a twist when things get a little intense between the characters. You might know the stars from other work – Kate Ashfield plays the girlfriend on Shaun Of The Dead and Paddy Constantine appears in The World’s End and Hot Fuzz.

Taking on a super retro 80’s vibe with the first single off the 2011 album, this video was the first taste of the more slick Arctic Monkeys that would shine through on AM, as we see a maturing band that is super comfortable in front of the camera. It’s visually engulfing and nice to watch when high (we’ve heard).

Possibly the most simple concept for a video ever, this one it looks like a fan’s youtube cover but there’s a certain charm to Turner that carries our attention for three minutes – even when he is just standing. The plainness of the video also draws your attention the lyrics and tune itself.

For many of us, this was our first look at the band that were about to make it huge. Nothing super special about the clip, it’s just weird and nostalgic to look at their pimply faces as they run through a live version of the song that would change everything for them.
