It’s safe to say that when local musos collaborate it always makes for something special, each bringing in their own distinct experiences, upbringings and musical inclinations into a melting pot of sonics. It’s a concoction further strengthened when the two musos in question are already close. And as is the case for indie rock BFFs Sloan Peterson and Pearl, it makes for some damn riveting creations.
It’s a sentiment embodied in the pair’s new collab ‘Wear My Heart Out’, which is out now. Characterised by fuzzy guitar lines with retro bass lines and punchy vocals, the tune is a fiery spell of life experience and the navigation of everything from lockdowns, love, loss and everything in between.
It’s a cauldron of emotions mirrored in the uplifting music video, the two songbirds running around an empty cityscape to their heart’s content, all the while capturing the “raw, uninhibited dynamic/relationship” the two artists share with one another, as explained by Sloan herself.
We thought we’d facilitate a chat between the two BFFs to celebrate the new single and get the deets on everything from early beginnings, dream collabs and more. Check it below.
Sloan: Black zeros, and started because i was a bored teenager spending alot of time in this little art studio.
Sloan: Literally nothing except interpretive dancing.
Sloan: Portals to another doggy dimension.
Sloan: Byron Bay for months at a time after burn outs.
Sloan: The Kooks’ tour was the best experience of my life.
Sloan: Dream collaboration would be Angel Olsen
Sloan: Life will cease to exist without you :)
Pearl: I grew up in Bondi and went to Brent Street Performing Arts
Pearl: Probably have to be singing with my dad.
Pearl: ‘Linger’ by The Cranberries.
Pearl: What tha hell sloan? This question sucks. First heartbreak, first love. We went to school together, he was in the dance stream, I was in acting stream. It was cliched and lovely and then he dumped me after a year, probably because I was 16 and way too insecure and by that point I was stuck in the dance stream. I literally don’t know where to stop this answer. Eventually I dropped out of school haha. The end.
Pearl: I feel like I moved house a lot, played a lot of shithead, drank a lot of wine and obsessively cleaned mostly.
Pearl: Black for sureeee
Pearl: Um. No, I standby it. Change is inevitable.
