You might have heard it on triple j yesterday, but if you didn’t – and you would definitely remember if you did – Alex The Astronaut’s new single ‘If You Have To Go’ is a bloody gem of a tune. The bittersweet, but ultimately uplifting ballad was written during Troye Sivan’s World Pride writing camp in last year and feels like it was made for that moment in a movie when the protagonist realises who their true love is and runs to the bus stop to catch them before they leave. You know the type.

“It’s either a perfect thing or a really bad thing if you make a whole room of people cry,” Alex recalls. “By the end of the three minutes of ‘If You Have To Go’, Troye and my campmates had all welled up – so I guessed we were onto something.”

The tune follows ‘Cold Pizza’ which was co-written with Paul Kelly (full circle moment for those of us who are still bumping the ‘If I Could Start Today Again’ Like A Version) and is the second track from Alex’s upcoming EP, Rage And All Its Friends. Pre-save the EP here before you forget!

“For a long time, I felt like a sad, cranky mess,” says Alex. “This EP is about processing all those big emotions that were too overwhelming to ignore. It’s everything I have to say on the matter right now, and I hope it resonates with anyone who’s been through something similar.”
