Following a quiet year of grinding in the studio and refining their esteemed live show across the country, Brisbane/Meanjin duo WIIGZ have now unveiled the fresh fruits of their labour, releasing the first taste of their debut EP.

Titled ‘French Tips’, the new track from the ‘Hot Pants’ duo makes use of a carefree soundscape that draws influence from 2010s pop along with new-age dance. Sprinkle it with WIIGZ’ signature attitude and… well… it’s impossible for them to miss.

Both Zoe and Hannah’s vocals are sultry and alive with rigour, one that’s perfectly enhanced by the instrumental breakdown at 2:20 that incorporates a funky bassline and spacey synths. Up until that point you’d be forgiven in thinking that WIIGZ had truly immersed themselves into the pop stratosphere, but the explosion of instrumentation in the tail end of the record iets you know that they’re still every bit the genre-pushing duo we fell head over heels for following their 2021 debut, ‘wwwwwhy’.

The accompanying video is just as invigorating, with the powerhouse duo linking up with director Charles Buxton-Leslie and cinematographer Brianna Da Silva for a fun-loving day-in-the-life. It’s a full embodiment of the WIIGZ ethos, one that’s by design as the two-piece explain, “We are known for running around, being wild and chaotic, so we wanted to show this in the music video. The concept is tongue n cheek, it’s silly but it even gets a little gruesome at the end. That’s WIIGZ it feels like, taking things a little less serious, silly, fuck you pay us, spotlight in the room pop-star energy. Lol. Come join the party.”
