Your weekend party rap album is right here, courtesy of Brazen Barbie.

There’s a little something for everyone on BRAZEN, the debut EP from the Kenyan-Australian. It follows on from a string of singles dropped over the past couple of years that established more of a persona than a “sound”. That persona hits harder than a sledgehammer, radiating all the necessary hubris and swagger for a rapper carving a path in the Aus industry.

For all of the sonic twists and turns on BRAZEN, you can feel Breezy (assuming she doesn’t mind being called that) in complete control. Throughout the mixtape, there are throwbacks to the maximalist, RnB-infused beats of Lil Kim and Missy Elliott, with darker trappy tracks, and even a few jazzy Tribe Called Quest flavours.

‘Ain’t No Dummy’ opens the album and sets the empowerment-meets-fuck-the-world tone of the mixtape and is the closest she gets to “commercial”, with the BB instantly hooking us before taking the reins and guiding us through the powerful bars that encapsulate this point in her life.

“BRAZEN is a self portrait,” shares Brazen Barbie. “Each track is a snapshot of a different mood or moment in my life, and a different version of the voice in my head. I wanted it to feel like turning up, in your head, and in a diary all at once. The themes that come across the project are self worth, resilience, power, and owning every part of myself, the good, the gritty, the tired. The themes run deep even when the delivery is playful.”

This is clearly just the beginning for Brazen Barbie. Stay tuned for more from what we’re predicting will become one of the prominent voices in the Aus rap game in the coming years.
