You might remember back in 2022 there was a little bit of a hypestorm surrounding Melbs-based songwriter Elizabeth M Drummond. Her debut EP attracted plenty of attention on Aussie soil, but also was plugged plenty on British radio and KEXP while filling columns in the Guardian, The Sunday Times and a swag of music presses. Now she’s returned with two new videos and a brand-spanking new single which takes a wry look at the world of “self-help” in the form of ‘Simplify’.
The tune is entrancing and brooding with Drummond’s breathy vocals guiding us on a kind of dark meditation. Sonically, it builds towards a chaotic outro which features Kirsty Tickle from Party Dozen on saxophone, reflecting Drummond’s inner turmoil and the pitfalls of being overwhelmed by your own self-improvement “journey”.
Accompanying the track are two videos, the first a tongue-in-cheek interview. “I wanted to make a Tim & Eric style set and interview, with a very tragic and tacky 80’s morning show twist,” Drummond says of the video. “Rick Clifford co-directed and styled the whole thing with me and brought it all to life, shooting it on 80’s Betamax cameras. I hired my best friend Rhi (artist name ‘Merpire’) as the host, Denise Swan. As it turns out, she is one of the best actors I know. My equally charismatic band are featured too.”

The second video sees Drummond and her band perform the track “live” on the show:

To celebrate the release of ‘Simplify’ Elizabeth M Drummond will be performing at The Gasometer Upstairs on April 11, joined by her enigmatic band, and special guest Mika James. See you there!
