Hot off a powerhouse signing to Chugg Music and an extensive national tour with Teenage Dads, Sydney’s Lola Scott is back with an all-new single…

Titled ‘High School Drama’, the new outing from the multi-instrumentalist is an unabashedly angsty, fierce and hard-hitting condemnation of the schoolyard gossip we’ve all had to endure at one point or another. Contrary to her previous records that, despite their defiant nature, are poppy at heart and are totally inviting, ‘High School Drama’ is gritty in its presentation and thus eludes the listener at first, which consequently sucks us all the more in.

Beginning with hurling electric guitars and clattering drums, the soundscape is quickly blessed by Lola’s distorted vocals, with the ‘We Don’t Make Sense’ singer delving into her lower range as she stresses she doesn’t want any part of the listener’s ‘High School Drama’.

Then comes a series of lyrics so witty and button-pushing that you can’t help feeling like you’re in the thick of the ’90s grunge scene, with lines like “It’s a sunny day to dump your lover/It’s a sunny day to slip slop slap/My ass looks great in really tight leather/Maybe we just weren’t meant to be together.” It’s quintessential Lola Scott attitude front and centre, one that’s blissfully complimented by the contrasting hook that sees her dig into her head voice for a soothing vocal hook that never fails to ease the soul.

Explaining the defiant nature of the new record, Lola explains, “I wrote ‘Highschool Drama’ about avoiding the drama of schoolyard gossip and a bit about how great my ass is and taking back my power back from relationships that don’t serve me” while adding that she embraced “the chaos of joke lyrics, writing all the dumb things that came straight to my mind without trying to make too much sense of them.”

It’s a killer offering from the Sydney upstart that continues her winning streak of genre bending, meshing and weaving along with fire starting vocals that hit hard and fast, hence why she makes the Perfect Artist of the Week. Check out the full song above and be sure to buy/stream it here.
