Mallrat’s second full-length album cements her status as Australia’s alt-pop songwriting queen.

It seems only fitting that *Light Hit My Face Like a Straight Right* drops on Valentine’s Day. Not so much that the album is full of “love” songs (though there are plenty of them), but more that the day is this fantastical thing that people can build up in their minds and escape into.

Over the course of the 12 tracks, she weaves this magical path that we can’t help but be seduced by. Her dreamy vocals guide us along over ethereal synths, ambient jungle beats, and occasional acoustic guitars—it’s bedroom pop, only your bedroom is outside at a hippie-filled doof.

This week it was also announced that she will be joining Kylie for a run of shows on the country’s biggest stage. It would be easy to say that it’s some sort of “passing of the baton” from one pop legend to a rising one, but in reality, what Mallrat is reaching for (and grasping) goes way beyond Kylie’s bubblegum servings.

Outside of Kylie, she’ll be bringing Light Hit My Face Like a Straight Right to the stage this April with three massive shows across the east coast. Kicking off at Sydney’s Enmore Theatre on April 3rd, she heads home to Brisbane for a night at Fortitude Music Hall before wrapping up at The Forum in Melbourne – TICKETS HERE.
