These New South Whales are back and they’re feeling empowered.

It’s been a while between drinks for TNSW fans. Outside of their all-time cover of Chumbawamba’s iconic belter ‘Tubthumping’, way back in 2023, it seems the group have been pretty preoccupied with their What A Great Punk podcast and figuring out what sort of creamy things Todd will eat (IYKYK).

‘Instinct’, which comes with news of a national tour and a strobed-out video, is the band doing what they do best – hitting us with a chunky bass, delicious guitar lines and vocals delivered with frontman Jamie Timony’s typically punchy articulation. Lyrically, the track feels like a call to arms of sorts, even if that call to arms is an internal one…

“I’ve wasted so much energy over the years worrying about what other people think,” Timony explains. “It’s such a futile, counterproductive pursuit – one of those lessons I’m always having to re-learn. The chorus lyrics are a mantra for a different way of thinking. The vocals felt triumphant and empowering – the song put us all in a really good mood the day we wrote it. Underneath the positivity, there’s a spirit of anger and unrest with the way things are… Now more than ever, it feels important to stay connected to yourself, your instincts, and to what’s actually real.”

The accompanying clip gets us pretty revved for some bloody shows. Directed and edited by Passive Kneeling, we see the band stand and serve in front of a giant LED screen that flashes lyrics throughout. Though we’re assuming the screen won’t be fitting in the tour bus, it has got us keen to see the band in real life…

They’ll be hitting stages all over the country in October and November (dates below), and hopefully we’ll have a few new tracks to sing along to by then too. Stay tuned.
