It’s hard to put Sydney’s OCY in a basket. Like Posh and Becks’ hairstyles, her debut EP Red Moon dips and sways through the ’90s, with her voice somehow distant, as if she’s hovering above these tracks. In short, it’s a pretty unique listen.
Kicking off with ‘Hardcourt Marseille’ (my personal favourite track), she sets this moody tone that’s reminiscent of Portishead, with the vocals giving a precision-pop feel – like she could be the long-lost member of All Saints or the Spice Girls. By the first drop, you know you’re onto a good one.
‘Placebo’ is built around this breakbeat that – ironically, given its title refers to an ineffective drug – transports you to a euphoric dancefloor where the sonics wash over you. It’s followed by the title track, ‘Red Moon’, which encapsulates the dreamy-versus-melancholy tightrope that OCY dances across throughout this release, making it such a rewarding re-listen.
Ok, taking it back now. ‘Last Thing’ is my pick from this album. The melodies in this song are super unpredictable, with OCY twisting and turning just when you think you know where it’s headed, but still keeping you along for the ride. That ride ends with ‘Semi Hurt’: a grungey lullaby with an outro you can imagine will go the fuck off when performed live.
Good news for you is that OCY is performing with Jordan Laser tonight at the Vic on the Park in Marrickville. If you run, you can still make it!
