You know the kind of tune that automatically lifts a dance floor into a hypnotising trance? That’s how we’re feeling about Mparntwe and Naarm-based producer RONA.’s latest drop, the euphoric, house-centric ‘Be My Medicine’. The line “you can be my medicine”, which is sung by RONA. herself, is one of those earworms that will haunt you (in the best kind of way) after hearing it live.
However, the new song from the rapidly rising the First Nations artist was born far away from sweaty clubs, entwined with country and the expansive Aussie outback:
“‘Be My Medicine’ is a song grounded in place and time,” RONA. says. I began writing it in 2022 when people and opportunities were coming into my life that were medicine to me. The song started from some atmos I recorded when I was out bush. In the soundscape, you can hear the day’s first birds and the sound of my fingers scratching on swag canvas as I wake up on Kaytetye Country. The song is about those moments when you lean into spaces, places and people that are healing.”

‘Be My Medicine’, which is RONA.’s first release of 2024 follows on from a gangbusters past year which saw her performances at Splendour and Pitch, drop a much-hyped Boiler Room set, and attract acclaim from music press around the country.
Her commitment to storytelling and advocacy work for First Nations people as founding CEO of Common Ground has also not gone unnoticed. Working as a Director for First Nations Future has seen the First Nations organisation launch a funding platform that shifts wealth and power to First Nations community-driven initiatives creating intergenerational change.
