It all started with a phone call from Sticky Fingers’ Paddy Cornwall who could barely contain his excitement (and he’s usually a pretty excitable fella) in telling us that their label had just signed this young bloke they met at a workshop in Armidale – his name was of course Rox Lavi – and that he’s worthy of our attention.
Fast forward a few weeks later and he’s in Sydney performing with 3%, with his track ‘Burn My Scars’ already garnering attention from triple j, doing studio sessions with the likes of Jimmy Nice. We tagged along and watched Rox, the kid from Ipswich in Queensland who’d only been on a plane a handful of times, hold his own in the studio before giving the crowd a workout on stage. Now with his debut EP Blah Blah About The Blah Blah out, we get a fuller picture of an artist who’s demonstrating a clear knack for picking melodies and locking into grooves, while still pulling influences from everywhere and anywhere. In tracks like ‘Awkward Drive’ he channels a near-Drake flow before switching it up with the Baxter Dury-style, club-ready tune ‘AcRyLiCs’, with his strong yet sensitive delivery at the core of each song.

Throughout the EP, it’s clear why the Westway crew were eager to get his signature on paper. Similar to their other artists Freddy Crabs, Dante Knows and The Terrys (and obviously Sticky Fingers), there’s a fluidity to Rox’s style, while the lyrics are anchored in his experience as a young man living life to the fullest… wherever that takes him.
