Just saying, that might be the best way to absorb Rochelle Jordan’s third full-length album Through The Wall. Dropping last year, the record made top-ten lists from just about every major music masthead, with good reason, blending 90s dance with R&B and soul, all funnelled through her breathy and enchanting vocals.
The opener, ‘Grace’, is maybe the most telling track on the record — not because of its swelling orchestral, gospel feel, but because the London-born, Toronto-raised artist is reminiscent of the outsider dance-pop-meets-art stylings of Grace Jones. This is not a claim we make lightly.
Of course, with over 200 million streams to her name, there’s no shortage of bangers too. Throughout the album, house beats underlie ethereal synths, giving it this 90s feel with a modern energy and clean production. Tracks like ‘Ladida’ and ‘Do It Too’ have a club energy while also throwing out so many vocal hooks for us to cling on to, proving she’s a master at riding a groove.
