Well, it sort of is… Basically ‘Bittersweet’ — the track we’re spotlighting today — also comes with a Village Days collab; the Bittersweet Cherry Sour. Before you ask, Village Days is a Gladesville brewery, not a Kinks-inspired indie-rock band. As delicious as that sounds, it’s beside the point.
‘Bittersweet’ is Bonniesongs’ new drop (no pun intended), following on from last year’s ‘Halloween Birthday, and sees her continue down this path that blends this off-kilter etherealism with these sweet, sweet melodies. It’s breathy and gritty, kind of like Julia Jacklin meets PJ Harvey meets Slint which, if you’re in the mood for some layered, grungEy songwriting, really hits that sweet spot.
“I started working on it whilst locked down in New Zealand 2020. As most people were, I was incredibly worried and depressed about the future of the world,” Bonniesongs says. “My Irish family were all on the other side of the planet, and we had packed up and left Sydney within 24 hours to get to my partner’s family in New Zealand… Bittersweet came from trying to remind myself to stay fun and joyful. I missed playing with my band and was trying to write things that would be fun to play.”

The accompanying visuals, which were directed by long-time Julia Jacklin collaborator Nick McKinlay, have a real 90s feel to them, and it’s not just the VHS vibes. There’s that classic concept of putting an artist on a stage with fairy lights and the occasional monster and letting them cook.
You can catch Bonniesongs playing at Lazythinking in Sydney (a few times) over the coming months — check out the dates below, including tonight’s show. Maybe even have some Bittersweet Cherry Sours beforehand?
