Silky. Buttery. Sexy – it’s hard to describe the vocal stylings of Winston Surfshirt without running into words that you could just as easily find on the back of a VHS porno from the 80s. Over the past three or so albums, we’ve come also to learn that a food-related song/album title is always on the cards (see Panna Cotta, Apple Crumble, Sponge Cake etc.) which brings us to today’s release ‘One Sugar’.
The tune is a funkified jam that feels like that stage in the night when the first few drinks have settled and you’re feeling your best, although it’s probably not the smartest idea, you’re contemplating a dance floor, or some karaoke – you’ve got a nice shine on and things are just getting started. It comes with a glitchy vid from lord, Throat Pasta:

According to Winston, the song “just feels so me but with that added lemon and one of the first songs written with Oscar Sharah. Sometimes you spend ages trying different melodies when you’re writing a song and sometimes the first thing that comes into your head and out of your mouth just fits perfectly, and it’s like it was already written… if that makes sense.”
“Lyrically do what ya want: you can take it literally – like I literally take one sugar in my coffee and she only drinks sparkling water and makes a good pavlova – or you can take it metaphorically, like maybe those “2 sugars” are too much and we’re all getting older and need to calm down a bit and look after ourselves, but the fact you put your blessings in the sand and in that tiny grain the chance you end up in this exact life is pretty fucking crazy but maybe it’s just my coffee order….”
Winston’s lining up a big winter – first stop, headlining VIVID Sydney at Tumbalong Park on Saturday 14th June with electro-jazz wizard Jerome Blazé in tow. Then, come July 25th, the new album WINSTON drops via Sweat It Out. Stay tuned…
