The mantra behind Summer Dance is simple: Daytime vibes, the beautiful historic surroundings of the National Art School, and worldwide tunes played loud – whether that be house, techno, UKG or whatever gets the dancefloor heated. This Sunday, they’ll be saying goodbye to Summer Dance for the year with Glenn Underground, Anthony Naples, Daydreams and Mira Boru taking over the decks.
Ahead of the party, the lads from Astral have run through five of their unforgettable Summer Dance parties. Grab your tickets here for this Sunday’s jam, it’s gonna be fun:
Summer Dance was a huge undertaking for us. The venue had never been used for these types of events before and the costs of putting it on were astronomical. However, we believed Sydney was in need for something like this – a series of events that showed of just how beautiful our city can be and the strong cultural significance of day parties and the vibe they bring.
We had our fair share of hiccups leading up to the series and the cherry on the top was the pouring rain on the day of the first party with Omar S. However, nearly 800 kids turned up despite all the odds and Omar S delivered a set like only he can! It was a huge reaffirming moment for us considering the amount of work we put in and paved the way for the series over the next couple of years following.
He closed out the day with his classic tune ‘Set It Out.’
We were lucky enough to have Julio Bashmore headline the first Summer Dance in our second year. Julio closed out the day with the song which originally made us fall in love with him. He dropped his 2011 anthem ‘Battle For Middle You’ just before our curfew hit, and the entire crowd was singing along to the melody of the track ”wob wob wob wob” – a real big closer!
The closing set of any Summer Dance is always special, but when you extend the invitation to Ben Fester to be the first local artist to round out the day – you know it’s gonna be a goody. It was pretty surreal to hear the siren in The Gnocchi’s ‘Only The Keep Music Strong Survive‘ start to wind up as the rain came down, making sure nobody even thought about running for cover.
Justin & Eamon were a very special guest at Summer Dance, as they host parties on a similar tip in NYC, so we knew they were always going to deliver a special set for us at National Art School. Hearing the gospel voices of ‘Earnest & Just – Still Here‘ kick at peak time was definitely a highlight for us. The guys really understood the direction of the party and the vibe we are always trying to get across to the dancers.
Moodymann arrived to Summer Dance with his trademark mesh stocking half covering his face, ready to play using iPhone headphones and a stack of CDs and vinyls. He made sure there was enough plastic cups to share amongst the crowd as he topped them up with Remy Martin, before taking centre stage.
Kenny is the master of surprises, and you can never really be sure as to what he’s going to play. He played one of the broadest sets I’ve heard, going everywhere from classic Detroit house all the way to Biggie Smalls. One of the memorable moments through was when he slowed it all right down and slid The Charmels’ ‘As Long As I’ve Got You’ into the mix.
