Rising stars Budjerah and MAY-A have today joined forces for a feel-good groove that’ll have you calling instead of texting for the foreseeable future, combining their immeasurable talents for their new collab ‘Talk.’
The new single is every bit as gorgeous as you’d expect. Opening with Budjerah’s gospel inclinations and MAY-A’s intimate tone, the two set a euphoric stage from the jump. That is of course before they launch into the hook, giving you an early peak as to just how resonant the two are when they join forces. The rolling pianos and drums give a real 60s sort of vibe, taking inspiration from greats like Sam Cooke as the two musos urge the listener to talk about love, life, change and us.
The video’s quality (directed by Courtney Brookes) is equally on par with the beauty of a single, following Budjerah and MAY-A as they link up in the James Theatre in Dungog, NSW. Of course, they totally take it over with their larger than life personalities, the pair holding surrealist press conferences and just goofing around in the most wholesome way on the theatre stage and its many hallways.
A personal favourite is around 2:50 when the confetti goes off for the final chorus, Budjerah and MAY-A letting rip and losing themselves to the track. The accompanying vocal acrobatics by the two heighten all of the emotions to an uplifting degree, both showing off their respective sounds and influences while paying tribute to the other.
Talking about the inspiration for the new single, Budjerah explains “Talk came about from a conversation with MAY-A [where] we were just talking about how a lot of people would rather text than call.
“It’s inspired by the fact that a lot of problems in our lives could be solved by talking openly and honestly, face-to-face, instead of hiding behind screens or lying,” with MAY-A adding “This song is about that moment where you cut all the bullshit and sit someone down, stare them in the face and say ‘let’s talk about this.’
As I’m typing this with the video playing in the background, I’m honestly finding it hard to stop smiling; a testament to just how damn gorgeous the two artists are on the new offering.
