Currently sitting at a 68,000 person capacity, Burning Man has met with Nevada’s Bureau of Land Management to increase by 32,000 and reach six figures in the near future. As noted by Billboard, the increase also comes with conditions, namely “closing off over 500 acres of lands before, during and after the event, increase the number of art pieces from 330 in 2017 to around 400, boosting the number of theme camps from 1,100 in 2017 to 2,000, and hiking up the number of mutant vehicles from 600 since 2009 to about 1,000.”
The mammoth event has earned a cult following of punters from around the globe, who transform the barren landscape into an other-worldly hub over a week-long span.
Burning Man has met with locals from Gerlach, Reno and Lovelock communities, addressing concerns about the proposed impact of the increase. Nevada’s Bureau of Land Management aim to write up a draft of Burning Man’s updated conditions by December 2018 with the aim of having a final draft by February 2019. Meanwhile, Burning Man 2018 will be held from August 26 to September 3 next year.
