This hits way too close to home…

Sunny Coast four-piece Betty Taylor have been on a tear across the country as of late, recently wrapping up their first headline tour in May and supporting the likes of Pacific Avenue, The Rions, girl in red and more. Understandably, everyone and their grandmother is chomping at the bit to see the quartet up close and personal, their signature brand of indie, rock and folk racking up a dedicated legion of listeners with each and every release. However, it’s safe to say they’re about to add a whole generation of heartbroken lovers to their ever-growing fanbase, with the band today releasing the unofficial breakup anthem of 2023, ‘Fuck You’.

Penned by frontwoman Sophie Patrick, the bop begins with her bare vocals along with a lone electric guitar. From the very first line you come to understand exactly where this song is coming from and who its aimed at, with Sophie singing, “Fuck the way that you treat me/Fuck me for letting you.” What follows is a tonne of seemingly justified “Fuck You”s to her former lover, however its interwoven with some super intricate lyrics that help to embody the failed relationship everyone has had at one point or another, with a personal favourite being the self-deprecating, “Go ahead and call me crazy darling/Maybe you’re right, Cause I’m still in love with you”.

The accompanying clip is a totally engaging cinematic of the band performing the song at a local karaoke night which plays like an Aussie soap (a much higher quality one). It quickly goes from just Sophie to singing the track by herself to the whole bar getting in on the action, with numerous of patrons shown to join the band as unofficial members as they belt out the lyrics at around the 1:55 mark. It’s a simple and beloved narrative that has been done plenty of times over the years, however, it feels distinctly fresh and grounded in Betty Taylor’s iteration of it, hence why it’s been on repeat in the LWA office this morning.

It’s another home run from the Sunshine Coast four piece, and it adds further evidence to the fact that they’re virtually incapable of writing a bad tune. Check it out above and be sure to buy/stream it here.
