Looks like I’ll be getting a refund on this Ableton license…

Just when you’d thought you’d seen it all in the world of album promo, Melbourne/Naarm singer-songwriter Courtney Barnett has upped the ante with her new offering, releasing an interactive stem mixer online.

The new gadget comes as Barnett continues to build hype for her upcoming project Things Take Time, Take Time, set to land on November 12th. What with it being kind of impossible to promote it beyond social media and singles, the ‘I’ll Be Your Mirror’ singer has instead brought her fans into the creative process.

The stem mixer basically lets listeners put their own spin on recent singles from Barnett’s upcoming album, with cuts like ‘Rae Street,’ ‘Before You Gotta Go’ and ‘Write A List Of Things To Look Forward To’ all on the table for users to try their hand at. Whether you’re a hardcore fan of the original versions or not, you’ll be able to make the tracks completely your own with the new software.

Of course, the mixer is way more simple than the ones you’d expect to see in production software like Ableton or Logic Pro X, utilising a user-friendly interface so fans can alter various drums, percussion, bass and more to their heart’s content. It makes it virtually impossible to get bogged down in all of the pitfalls associated with the mixing process, but, if you’re a sucker like me, you’ll be obsessing over every decibel just the same.
