Performing as Childish Gambino at Governor’s Ball in New York over the weekend, Glover ended his set by proclaiming “I’ll see you for the last Gambino album” before walking off, leaving fans scratching their heads and filled with mixed emotions. You can see footage from the moment below.
As reported by Triple J, Glover has talked about retiring the Childish Gambino project for some time now, saying in 2015 that “I always wanna do music. I love music. And I wanna be putting out projects quietly everywhere, and I wanna produce. I guess Childish Gambino is a period in my art time… I want to have periods in my life. I feel like Childish Gambino is a period that should come to a close. I like endings.”
Having last visited Australia as part of Falls Festival at the conclusion of 2016, Australian fans will be keeping their fingers crossed for one more Childish tour to compliment the last album before it all wraps up. However, Glover’s comments above indicate that he could be releasing more music under different monikers and styles in the future. Still, sad face:
