Around 95% of comments on Col3trane’s Youtube videos are just people wondering how he hasn’t “blown up” yet. We’re wondering the same thing.
Col3trane has been putting in work between London and LA for the last year-and-a-bit following the release of his highly promising debut mixtape Tsarina back in November 2017. ‘Penelope’ was the standout single from that project and immediately commanded attention for its Frank Ocean-esque delivery.
The further you dive into his discography the narrower that comparison feels though and while there are always going to be momentary reminders of that first impression, there are plenty more indicators that Col3trane is coming into his own future R&B/hip hop sound.
Still only 19, Col3trane has gone from strength to strength and joined forces with LA’s prolific Grammy-nominated production duo DJDS, as well as fellow UK singer/songwriter Raye, for a brand new R&B infused electronic track, ‘The Fruits’.
The experimental number is bass-heavy and quickly draws you in with smooth vocals as Col3trane and Raye exchange steamy, teasing verses. The intoxicating single tantalisingly details excitement, impulse and desire and at this point, the subject outline for “Club Seduction 101” pretty much writes itself. Paired with trippy visuals which would be perfectly at home projected on the wall of any underground club in the UK, ‘The Fruits’ is a self-aware statement of intent from the ambitious young Londoner.
We’re hanging out for Col3trane’s next project and with whispers of an imminent EP he’s definitely one to watch in 2019. In the meantime, impress your friends and play this at kick-ons next weekend. ‘The Fruits’ will have you hooked after one listen.
