Anyone else missing dance floors a whole lot more right now?

If you’re in the mood to bust a move but are in need of a fresh soundtrack, Sydney dance-maestros Cosmo’s Midnight have you sorted. Titled ‘Can’t Do Without (My Baby),’ the latest single from the producer-twins is a return to the floor-to-the-floor palette that launched them into the limelight in the mid 2010s, with the added disco-seasoning they’ve become synonymous with as of late.

Specifically, the track doubles down on the funk textures of their 2020 album Yesteryear, but with the housey elements of 2018’s What Comes Next front-and-centre. It’s almost a hybrid of the two albums, the catchy guitar riffs and tropical synths laying a vibrant soundscape for the Tommy Tate ‘I Can’t Do Enough For You Baby’ sample the boys put to use on the track.

The visuals for the clip pay tribute to the underground nightlife the Cosmo’s Midnight boys rose to prominence in, following a group of mates though the streets of Sydney as they make their way to a slightly-illegal party. There are also plenty of nods to dance culture as a whole, from the quintessential boombox to the classic packed stairwell that’s a given at any good party (we all know the one).

Speaking on the inspiration behind the nostalgic new offering, the duo explain, “It’s strange how people can be nostalgic for eras they’ve never experienced, for ‘Can’t Do (Without My Baby)’ we wanted to capture the feel of coming of age at the turn of the millennium (even though we were just lil babies at the time) when house music was in its golden age.”

A track for the house-purists in the Cosmo’s Midnight fandom, it’s safe to say 2022 is looking bright for the twins. Cosmo’s Midnight’s new single ‘Can’t Do Without (My Baby)’ is out now. You can buy/stream it here.
