If you’re anything like us, you’ve been diving into the silky sounds of US outfit Sports’ latest single ‘Baby Baby’ over the past couple of weeks. The track, which combines ethereal keys, funky bass and spacey vocals, sits nicely in a hard-to-define genre between electro-pop and RnB, with the duo inviting us aboard their cosmic groove train and taking us to a place of sonic bliss.
Despite the upbeat and at times melancholy tones of the tune, it actually comes from a pretty dark place. “‘Baby Baby’ is about codependency,” My emotions being dependent on someone else’s emotions. It’s about a vicious cycle of not being able to comfort someone who is crying, and their crying ending up making me more upset than they are.” vocalist Cale Chronister says.
“In the verses of the song I’m expressing my frustration with being unable to be comforting, and in the chorus I end up asking for comfort. It’s a messed upcycle that I find myself. The ego placing itself where it doesn’t belong. As the song goes on, that last chorus gets more emotional, and the same lyrics can be heard as actual empathy. As if something clicked and I felt your pain and cried with you; instead of just trying to make myself feel better.”

Throughout the track, there are echoes of Australian acts like Tame Impala, Empire of the Sun, and even GUM, with the group clearly operating in that modern psych-pop space. So naturally, we thought it would be nice to hear what other artists from Down Under they’d been digging since… forever.

First time I heard this track was on the opening credits of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4. I remember that song got me just as excited to skate as it did to play guitar. Guitar ended up winning over skating. Such a simple riff like many AC/DC songs but that’s why I love it! – Christian

Most people probably think of Austin Powers when they hear this song, but I’m lucky enough to have never seen Austin Powers. This song’s direct lyrics make me laugh, but it’s also so honest and sweet. Not a better way to express your infatuation with someone. I’m sure everyone can relate to these lyrics. – Cale

I grew up with the song on MTV and VH1. I vividly remember the music video. It was so yellow. I don’t think I really liked this song as a kid. It just was what was on the radio. It was pop music. But as I grew up and started getting into recording music I realized it was inherently a great song. Iconic duo. – Christian

I’m new to Sherbet. I’m a sucker for the clavinet and the strings that come in on the second verse. The song feels so matter of fact. The confidence can’t be faked. The attitude of the chorus is fun to place yourself in. – Cale

The most interesting thing about them is their ability to create a world that’s bigger than just themselves and the music. I love that idea. From the artwork to the live shows. Everything they do is immersive. Something we dream about doing with our live shows one day. Another iconic Australian duo. – Christian

I remember when this song came out I feel like every guitar player learned how to play it. Another music video I vividly remember as a kid. When it kicks into the chorus it’s like 100 bands playing at the same time. Timeless. – Christian

This song was written by The Waterboys, but Kirin’s version is performed so well, that it is my preference. I’m not one to really engage with covers, but Callinan’s “Return to Center” album (which is a cover album) really broke down the wall I put up against them. He performs every song like it’s his own. He is so talented it sucks. This song specifically encapsulates love. Such a beautiful way to express admiration for someone. It stings every time I hear it. I blast it in my Jeep at least once a week. – Cale

Michael Hutchence has been an inspiration for me as a frontman since Sports began. I love the way he delivers his lyrics. So calm and loose. His performances seem so effortless. I love the pauses in this song, and how much the chorus just sounds like love. – Cale

A song that is truly about Australia. As an American who has never been to Australia, this song gives me images and a feeling to accompany my imaginary perspective. I picture how isolated Australia is and how that must feel for people who live there. Neither in a good or bad way. Just makes me ask myself “how would I feel about the world if I grew up there?” – Cale

I had to include a Nick Cave song. I know it’s the theme song for Peaky Blinders, but I’ve never seen that either. Def seems like a good fit. I love how sneaky and minimal it is. The organ, the bass line, the tubular bells, and timpani all remind me of old television. The vocals and lyrics are terrifying. It’s terrific. – Cale

Similar to what I said about “I’ll Be Around”, their worldbuilding and ability to evolve both sonically and visually without misstepping is incredible. This song is great to put on and dream. – Christian
