Old dogworld was really good…

Their trio of singles that the Naarm outfit released in 2022 were melodic and melancholic; the kind of music that rewards repeat listening while also giving you a line or a hook to hang on to immediately. It was really good. Buuuutt their new direction, which we’re getting our first taste of today in the form of ‘FISHSACK’, is nothing short of powerful.

The track demonstrates a masterful understanding of energy – it sucks you in with these tense but pretty chords before spitting you out with singer and guitarist Yasmine’s vocals hitting harder than a microphone to the cranium. From then on you’re immersed, swaying between in this lush tapestry of verbed-out guitars and lullaby-esque vocals.

“‘FISHSACK’ was a turning point for dogworld,” the group explains. “We reached heavier textures than previously explored in the repertoire. An attempt to balance hard-hitting, aggressive guitars and drum interplay with a more free, dynamic sound. The opening guitar riff serves as a short palate cleanser, removing any preconceived notions for listeners. The song jolts between fast, distorted guitars, and aggressive drums to more spacious breakbeat sections, which bring more direct melodicism and offer a call and response between vocals and jazz-based guitar lines.”
