Definitely not what I had in mind when I saw the song title…
In the wake of a mammoth year that saw them make laps up and down Australia, release two EPs and become one of the nation’s most sought after indie rock duos, Sydney’s own Royel Otis are showing no signs of slowing down in 2024, releasing the latest single from their debut album, Pratts & Pain.
Titled ‘Velvet’, the single is a pounding stadium-ready chanter that sees the duo embrace the more fiery and archaic part of their sound as they reminisce on “yet another failed endeavour.” Despite the less than optimistic premise, the song is a jolt to the body, with high energy keys and warmly guitar lines providing an electrifying sonic backdrop for the Bondi upstarts to go ham on.

The new track comes hot off a whirlwind NYE set at Lost Paradise festival along with announcements for Barcelona’s Primavera Sounds festival and the recent announcement of yet another national tour. It’s clear the boys are on a real winning streak as of late, and it looks like ‘Velvet’ is only gonna fuel the fire.
