Introducing himself to the world a few months back with his track ‘Double Rainbow/Colour Blind’, which caught the attention of triple j, FBI, and plenty of punters around Sydney, Northern Beaches indie/folk singer songwriter Charlie Gradon has today returned with his debut EP, Self Doubt. It’s 22 minutes of deep introspection and infectious melodies crafted with a deft degree of precision.
From the get go it’s clear that there’s a delicacy to Gradon’s songs. Dreamy harmonies, chorus-soaked guitars, and a certain intimacy in his voice make it feel as if he’s put hours and hours into shaping these tunes and is cautiously sending them out into the airwaves. Nowhere is this more evident than on the title track ‘Self Doubt’, in which he lyrically grapples with uncertainty whilst In Rainbows-esque rhythm and guitars drive the haunting and entrancing song.
Tracks like the 60’s rock and roll flavoured ‘Going Nowhere’ and the cynical ‘Smart Humans’ offer a bit of a departure from the folk-rooted EP, proving that Gradon has no problem with taking things up a notch and his knack for finding melodic vocal hooks translates easily to guitar. Though, listening to tracks like ‘I Will Let Go’, his ability to evoke strong imagery and emotive responses is most prominent simply with an acoustic guitar and his innocent voice.
Charlie Gradon will be launching Self Doubt with his all-star live band that features members of Rackett, Narla and Boydos, this Friday at Waywards with supports from Dominic Breen and Brendan Moon – info here.
