The track sees Eves backed by warm acoustic guitar strums, her honeycomb vocals sitting atop them with airy-breeze. The hook is perhaps her catchiest yet, lyrics ‘Why I try so hard when/You let the love get so sour’ striking a perfect balance between emotive and playful. The track as a whole dips its toes wonderfully in the soundscapes of indie-pop and soul, leaving a hell of an impression that encourages multiple listens upon listens.
The video follows Eves she makes the most of the Brissy sun, taking up residence in a coastal escape as she immerses herself in all of the inevitable thoughts and feelings that result from the end of a relationship. Naturally, the clip is filled with literal lemons, taking the metaphor ‘when life gives you lemons, make lemonade’ to a whole new level as she allows herself to feel down and disappointed, but still manages to find strength in her new beginning.
It seems thats pretty dead-on with what she was going for, with the singer explaining: “The lyric “Well I didn’t want to write an FU song…” pretty much sums up Lemonade. It’s about reaching the end of my limit and being super frustrated with how a relationship panned out. “I wanted to explore the delicate feeling of playing it cool and moving on but also allowing myself to feel let down. That, plus I just really like lemonade.”
With the new offering, the ‘Complicated’ singer has announced her new EP Reruns, which is set to be released on September 24th. Written across London, Stockholm and her hometown of Brisbane over the past year-and-a-half, the new project is made up of six indie-pop bops that, knowing Eves, are going to be the soundtrack to your summer.
