It was a great time when artists like Bloc Party, The Vines (who Fan Girl have actually supported), and Muse were right up there at the forefront of music culture. But you don’t need to tel Melbourne/Naarm’s Fan Girl that. The four-piece clearly don’t mind delving back into the days of fast indie rock and putting their spin on it, as evidenced by their latest tune ‘the last one’.
The track is built upon a forceful beat, with spooky melodies, the odd jumpscare and wailing vocals colliding. The production is lush which, given it’s humble beginnings, is a bit of a surprise. “’the last one’ was written on the backend of a writing stint in Feb 2024. Like most of these songs, it came together very inspired, and super quickly. It started with a piano line that Vince played into an iPhone voice memo and sample, which we listened to obsessively,” the band says.
Filmed by Richard Clifford, the clip is a piece of DIY wizardry, and goes to show that you don’t need a huge budget (or maybe any budget) to pull off something engaging:

Ahead of their UK/Euro tour later in the year, Fan Girl will headline Cactus Room in Melbourne on Friday 25 May. Don’t sleep on tickets.
