Hot off the release of the gorgeously optimistic ‘My Future’ written with sister Billie Eilish, FINNEAS is keeping the heat going with new single ‘What They’ll Say About Us’ and a sublime music video. Written in lockdown, the tune is a gorgeous meditation on the strength of human connection and endurance in the face of hardship.
Starting with a simple piano loop that sets a super sombre but reflective tone, the stage is perfectly set for the LA native to bless us with those rich vocal cords, filled to the brim with undeniable emotion. By the time he gets to the hook the piano builds ever so gloriously, matching the lyrical resonance of bars ‘We’ve got the time to take the world/ And make it better than it ever was/ That’s what they’ll say about’ with complete ease. The tune never loses its place or focus, slowly yet surely building until the listener is completely overwhelmed by the power of FINNEAS’ message. We also gotta give a special shoutout to frequent collaborator Sam Bennett, who captures all the intimacy and magic we’ve come to expect from FINNEAS, all in one take.
Speaking on the track, FINNEAS confesses “I wrote this song in June after spending the day at a protest in Downtown LA, filled with hope with the prospect that millions of people were coming together from all over the world to fight against institutionalised racism and inequality.”
“During that time, I’d also been following Amanda Kloots as she documented her husband Nick Cordero’s time in the ICU while in a coma after being admitted for COVID-19. Imagining her sitting by his side, waiting, hopeful for him to wake up, it got me thinking about all the millions of people, all over the world, who also have loved ones, parents, children and extended family members going through the same thing. Fighting this horrific virus. Some will over-come and wake up again, while others, tragically may not. This song is dedicated to all who have had to endure this year. I hope this song can offer some sort of comfort to those who may need it.”
It’s a properly beautiful tune, and definitely a message we can all get behind in 2020. Definitely check it out below.
