Peep Temple frontman Blake Scott’s debut solo album dropped today and we’ve been listening to it on repeat in the office – it’s broody, well-crafted, intelligent and absorbing. ‘Bone Heavy’ is the opener and sets the mood for the whole album with Scott delivering moments of poetic beauty over the top of a darkly chaotic harmonic backing. Believe the hype:
There’s a reason why Kita Alexander is clocking nearly half a million Spotify streams per month. Actually, there are probably quite a few reasons, but one of the main ones is the fact that she consistently churns out tracks that combine heartstrung lyrics, a dancefloor sensibility and huge melodies. ‘Can’t Help Myself’ is no variation from this formula with Kita documenting that feeling of falling for someone completely unexpectedly:
“’Can’t Help Myself’ is about the push and pull of falling in love with someone you never expected to. Even though the feeling is unexpected I wanted the energy of the song to encompass the feeling of new love,” she says of the track. “The excitement, the butterflies, the smiles. I love looking back on the times I’ve fallen in love. There’s nothing quite like it, especially when you end up somewhere you never thought you’d be.”
Bringing together worldly beats and jazz-electronica, Christopher Port’s new EP Rituals is an immersive trip. It’s hard to put into words all the flavours and influences that Port has thrown into his musical pot and cooked to perfection, here’s how Port describes it:
“This record is an exploration of ‘rituals’ of all kinds: spiritual, emotional and physical. I was inspired by pagan rituals, spiritual jazz and the cosmic electronic sounds from the 60’s & 70’s, particularly the early combinations of modular synths and jazz. I drew from my jazz studies to inform the compositional process for this record…”
