With 2020 proving to be the worst year of our lifetimes, whilst also opening up doors for change, it seems to be a strange period to be talking about music. But, for many of us, music is offering an escape from day-to-day anxieties, allowing us to recharge our batteries and refresh mentally before diving back into daily politics and the causes we feel strongly about. So here are a few tracks that you may have missed over the past couple of weeks that are certainly worthy of your attention:
Fancy losing yourself in an immersive, synthy ballad? Reminiscent of Kevin Parker’s floating vocals and melancholy lyricism, Pluto Jonze’s latest tune is the kind of modern psychedelia that crawls in your ears and summons a physical response, seemingly slowing time to a near stop. The track is lifted from his forthcoming sophomore LP Awe and comes with the funky, guitar-driven tune ‘Kelsey In Corduroy’ which contrasts nicely as a B-side. Get amongst it.

Brisbane indie-rockers Sweater Curse are at it again, having not only dropped a bloody delightful single, but also news of a fresh EP coming our way soon. ‘Close’, which was co-written by Alex Lahey, is introspective, dreamy and poignant all at the same time – not that you’d get that from the clip. Roping in some familiar faces from the Aus music scene, the video is full of smiles and even a little bit o’ dancing. Check it out:

Having already attracted the attention of triple j with a string of soulful indie-pop singles, Adelaide artist Stellie has recently returned with the funky-yet-dark ‘I’d Have Killed For You’. Production-wise there’s a real shine to it, with Stellie’s vocals nothing short of intoxicating throughout. We have a feeling that she is destined for some pretty big things, so be sure to get in early:

Any day that Melbourne multi-instrumentalists Mildlife release new music is a good day in our books. Their jazzy, Weather Report-flavoured newie is more evidence of why these guys are easily one of Australia’s most underrated acts. Mixing funky basslines, sweeping synths and groovy keys, the tune feels like it could easily be the theme song to a sexy 1980s sci-fi cop show, and we can only hope that this is the exact reason why the track was created… Stay tuned.

Not a lot is known about composer Sinj Clarke. The enigmatic keyboardist dazzled us with his debut LP Music For An Italian Afternoon, played one show in Sydney, then disappeared for a minute, only furthering his mystique. Well now he’s back with a double single that is equally as enrapturing as MFAIA, chuck it on and drift into another world, a world a little less complex than this one…
