Ready for some tasty Aussie talent?

Whilst Tame Impala might be making a lot of headlines with the release of their new single last week, there’s been loads of smaller acts that have been dropping equally as awesome tunes. Take a look at the music that is getting us buzzed below, and be sure to follow our Spotify playlist to stay up to date with our faves:

Los Tones

So last week Sydney’s Los Tones took to Instagram to share that they would be dropping a new track today, and we’d be lying if we said we hadn’t checked on their Facebook page a couple of times this morning. ‘Manipulation’ is the first new music from the group since their 2015 record What Happened, and it’s full of the things we love about Los Tones – surf licks, trippy lyricism, and intensely hooky grooves. You can catch them playing in Melbourne and Wollongong in May (info here).

Nicholas Connors

We caught up with Newcastle crooner Nicholas Connors for a chat shortly after he dropped his new EP Strange Dreams and we’ve been spinning it constantly ever since. The track below is easily one of the EP’s standouts; a clunky piano lead tune, which feels like a hybrid between Tom Waits and Nick Cave, with Connors oozing his trademark intoxicating swagger. He’ll be playing Newcastle this Friday with Papa Pilko & The Binrats before heading down to Sydney a couple more times in April (info here).

Sloan Peterson

It’s been a real pleasure watching/listening to the evolution of Sydney singer Sloan Peterson over the past couple of years. Her debut EP Midnight Love was heavily influenced by the sounds of the 50’s-era doo-wop, and while she’s retained a vintage glow, her latest singles have seen her incorporate more of the synthy/guitar-driven elements of indie rock, resulting in a sound that feels nostalgic and futuristic at the same time. She’ll be performing May 9th at The Lansdowne, and we strongly recommend you get yourself there (info here).

100

Fresh from their nomination for ‘Best Live Act’ at the FBi SMAC awards, local grunge lords 100 have dropped their first new music since their ripping debut EP, Cortisone. It comes in the form of a thrashy post-apocalyptic number called ‘Just Us’, and shows the four-piece have no intention of letting the buzz surrounding them evaporate anytime soon. You can experience 100 playing with The Laurels this Friday at The Lansdowne (info here), before they take the stage at Bad Friday (info here).

Johnny Hunter

Sydney post punk five-piece Johnny Hunter have just returned with another raucous ode to young manhood, ‘Ashamed’. With lyrics like “Friends forever in a bathroom stall, until they steal your line…” it’s easy to see why these guys are striking a chord with listeners around the country – not to mention their live show, which is as always worth catching. Outside of playing Bad Friday, the group will be taking ‘Ashamed’ around the country in April/May (info here)
