The election is well and truly over. And regardless of whether you’re gutted like our public broadcaster soon will be, or you’re laughing all the way to the bank, we can all agree that some new music can only make things better. So, without further adieu, here’s some local lords that we’ve been tuning into lately:
P.S. Head here to follow our Locals Without Spotify playlist, where you can listen to all these acts (and many more):
These guys just spent the last few weekends on the road with Los Tones, which gives you a pretty good idea of their sound. Part surf, part garage, their latest track ‘Mirrors’ features some wailing vocals that would make Captain Beefheart proud and is bookended by tasty intro and outro jams that will have you pining for the good old days of rock and roll – a must listen:
Sydney’s favourite indie-electro act are back with a brand new tune, clip, and headline shows which is great news for those of us completely addicted to their highly danceable and intriguingly dark brand of pop. ‘Only If The Water Is Cold’ sees the trio suck us in with some powerful synths, with co-vocalist Christian Values launching into a huge verse/chorus that will have you pumping your chest as tears stream down your face. They’re launching this tune in Melbourne (May 30th) and Sydney (May 31st) – info here.

The psych-blues trio just dropped the title track from their forthcoming album, Till The Weather Changes, and it’s a tensely energetic rollercoaster with no brakes. Recorded live to tape, the track captures the gritty spirit of these talented musos so vividly that you can close your eyes and imagine them playing it live at a private concert in your mind. What can you say about Mere Women? Their latest offering ‘Spell’ is a brooding and hypnotic track that literally sounds like someone’s control spiralling out of their hands, which suits the lyrical themes perfectly. It’s an absorbing tune that has got us extremely keen for their fourth record which is due out later in the year.

Ok, so sure Uncle Murl are falling more into that international than local category, but this clip is so fine we had to include it. Following frontman Ambrose Kenny-Smith through an abandoned yard, with nothing but a camera and a bunch of rusty props, the video is a testament to what you can do with a great tune and a huge performance.
